The recovery from a liver transplant surgery

Most of the top-notch liver transplant hospitals in India perform the surgery with a certain degree of precision. As far as the surgery is concerned it would take around 4 to 8 weeks to be over. The patient is going to visit the hospital the night before and then head over to the hospital room. You are given a dose of anesthesia close to 2 hours before the operation takes place. In fact, they would need to go for a procedure where the old damaged liver is removed. In its place, a new liver would be put in place as well. Then they are asked to head over to the ICU with the breathing tube still intact as it is.

Once the procedure is over the patient has to be in the ICU for 2 weeks. Once done they would be in the regular hospital for 8 to 10 days at the most. Then you are asked to head home and the general feeling is that you will not be all that great for the next 3 months or so. Once that point of time is over they seem to be in good health as well. Patients who are part of this procedure end up with a large incision that goes on to replicate a big mark. It could be just below the rib cage and on both sides as well. Here the point of consideration is that the incision is pretty large in size.

Having said so there are some complications that could spring up with liver transplant surgery

  • Recurrent diseases- a host of liver transplant diseases make their way back once the transplant procedure happens to be over. In this regard, Hepatitis c does appear to be one of the common diseases that do appear. The doctor would go on to discuss the situation with you as well.
  • Rejection- the defense system of the body does go on to protect the body against various types of microorganisms. The sad part is that it goes on to view the liver as a foreign object and is going to destroy anything that is going to try to protect you. In medical terms, this process goes by the name of rejection. In order to avoid such a situation, the patient is given a dose of immune medicines to prevent such a situation from occurring in the first place. This could be found out early if you undertake biopsies at a pretty early stage. In a majority of cases, this could be controlled as well.

With the course of immune medicines, the chances of rejections decrease considerably. With the help of the drugs, the resistance to a new foreign object happens to be a thing of the past. In fact, you would need to be part of these medicines for the rest of your life. The reason is that the liver will reject them after surgery. Once the surgery is over the immediate doses would be on the higher side.
